Presentation

The presentation was by Justin Cook, a photographer for The Roanoke Times Current.

  • Introduced to photography by a high school teacher
  • Prefers a small camera with a broken lens (joke since his camera has a broken filter on the front)
  • Expressed his opinion on Canon vs. Nikon
  • Enjoys tough stories — something to give him a challenge.
  • Interested in social justice
  • Influenced by Eugene Richards
  • Another influence, Living with the Enemy by Donna Ferrato
  • Presented a slideshow of photos of a disabled veteran he took.  Used B&W to avoid white-balance issues with inconsistent natural and artificial lighting.
  • Had the opportunity to travel with the Durham Police’s “Gang Buster Unit” every night for a year.  Presented a slideshow of shots of povery, violence, and living conditions.
  • Disagrees with 20′th century concept that there is a huge gulf between the photographer and his/her subject.  Wants to get in close and know the subject.
  • Finds that now that photography is his job, he does it less as a hobby
  • Limited editing since his work is photojournalistic.  Tone, sharpening, minor dodge/burn.
  • For a laugh, go to Photoshop Disasters or Fark.com
